Loft Insulation
Why insulate?
Over 50% of heat is lost through the walls and roof of an uninsulated home. By insulating your home, you’ll prevent heat from escaping, reducing the energy needed to warm your home. This means lower energy bills and more value for money.
Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce heat loss. Building regulations recommend a minimum depth of 270mm of insulation in the loft. If your loft has less, it may need a top-up. At Norfolk Warm Homes, we’ll survey your loft, check the current insulation depth, and determine the right amount of new insulation needed to ensure optimal warmth in your home.
What do I need to prepare for installation?
The installer will need access to your loft, so please ensure it is cleared beforehand to allow for the new insulation to be laid. If there are any pests, such as mice, rats, or wasps in your loft, you will need to arrange for treatment or removal before the installation can proceed.
What happens during installation?
The installation process typically takes just a few hours. If the existing loft insulation has deteriorated and cannot support new insulation on top, the installer will remove and dispose of it. The new insulation will then be rolled out across the loft, fitting snugly between the rafters. To ensure proper airflow and reduce the risk of condensation - which can damage the roof felt and timbers - ventilation will be included as part of the installation. You can read more about ventilation at the end of this booklet. Once installed, your new insulation will have a lifespan of 40 years.
Looking after your new insulation
After installation, we recommend that you avoid placing any items on top of the newly installed insulation, as this can compress the material, reducing its effectiveness and potentially causing damage. Doing so may also invalidate the warranty and guarantee provided by the installer.
What will it cost me?
If you are an owner-occupier and meet the grant criteria, then it will cost you absolutely nothing. The grant will cover the complete cost of the installation.
Where’s the catch?
There isn’t one. Any enquiry you make will be without obligation, you don’t have to have the work done until you are completely happy with the plan.
This programme is funded through the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero and administered on behalf of Norfolk Councils by Broadland and South Norfolk Councils.
