Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity walls consist of two layers, the outer layer (usually brick) and an inner wall (usually block), with a gap or “cavity” between them. 30% of heat is lost through uninsulated cavity walls.

How happens during install?

Firstly, small drill holes (around 22mm) are made at regular intervals along the outside walls of your home. Next, a specialised piece of equipment is used to pump insulation into the cavity between the inner and outer brick layers. Once the cavity is fully insulated, the installer seals the drill holes with cement. After the cement dries, the holes are barely noticeable. Installation typically takes one day to complete.

What about disruption?

As cavity wall insulation is typically installed from the outside, the works are not disruptive. However, if your home isn’t a bungalow, scaffolding may be needed to access the higher parts of the exterior walls.

Post installation guarantee

Once the new insulation is installed, it will be covered by the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA) for 25 years.

Dealing with previous insulation

If your home has previously had cavity wall insulation and is found to be ineffective due to poor workmanship or materials, an extraction may be needed to remove the old insulation before installing the new. If this applies to your home, our surveyors will notify you and we’ll discuss the next steps. If funding is not available to cover the cost, you may need to cover the expense yourself, as this work is not funded as standard.

What will it cost me?

If you are an owner-occupier and meet the grant criteria, then it will cost you absolutely nothing. The grant will cover the complete cost of the installation.

Where’s the catch?

There isn’t one. Any enquiry you make will be without obligation, you don’t have to have the work done until you are completely happy with the plan.

This programme is funded through the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero and administered on behalf of Norfolk Councils by Broadland and South Norfolk Councils.
